The Craft of the Wise

Of my people and my Land.

Since my early years I have held most dear to me the knowledge that I have gained while on hill tops, rocky shores and other wild places. The voice of the wild spoke to me as it did to my ancestors, the peoples of the western shores of the Irish, Scottish, British lands. When I lived with Aboriginal Australians I found that this was also the way they experienced and learnt from life - and that we all have home places, sacred places, that especially sing to us.

I found too that just as we are all made up of atoms that were once parts of our ancestors, of rocks and even stars, just as the human embryo remembers the whole course of evolution as it briefly develops gills and a tail, we also carry within an immense treasure house of inherited knowledge. When I learnt how to travel within to find this, I also learnt why so many ancient religions greatly honour ancestors . I found them there within me, ready to guide and teach . We represent and are our ancestors in today's world - as we are also the rocks, plants and animals from which we are descended. They all today help form our bodies and give us life - as we too will given them life when we, in one sense, die.

When I returned from Australia to this my land, I went to learn of my own Goddesses and Gods (which I do not see as competing deities but as images we create to depict different aspects of the One). I found my people on my mother's side, from Ulster, had formed images that they called Macha and The Morrigan - and Brighid. I found that these images spoke to me, became real - for they came out of ancestors that loved the land that I love. The poem I wrote when meditating on Macha and in response to the Troubles can be found here - see The Lament of Macha.

I included on this page some resources that you can explore -with many thanks to the people who put them on the Web.

And finally a website that might seem strange to find here - but I include it to honor a very important part of my own pathway and some very deeply spiritual and lovingly wise people. The Catholic Worker movement founded by Dorothy Day has open houses of hospitality across the world. Many deeply radical anti-war and pro-sustenance actions have been carried out by its members.

The Tarot

The Tarot card pack is a tool used by many to explore and express our inner being, our senses and consciousness - and that of others. Many of the archetypes are drawn on in a manner similar to Jung's own explorations. In the hands of a skilled practitioner who is sensitive to others it can work a very natural magic.
